Summer Quarter is Off to a Great Start!!

This week was the first week of the Summer Quarter and boy has time flown!! This quarter made my 2nd full year of attending Sullivan! Boy! Has time just flown by!! I'm in my last culinary lab and then I'm off to my internship! It seemed so far away in June 2010!

I've learned so much and made so many lifelong friends! I'm so very glad that I decided to make Sullivan University my school of choice! Being in the Culinary Arts program has only took my love of food to a higher level.  I've learned to appreciate food and every aspect that goes along with it, which includes embracing foods that I would have never considered a few years ago and respecting the art of the craft.

New quarter, new classes, new people

This is my third quarter and I am starting to feel less like a newbee and more at ease. Finding my way around the school is not hard anymore, and I've started to develop a routine for homework and test preparation. Still every new class with a new teacher is a challenge, and the first two weeks can get a little stressful with trying to figure out expectations and workload.
In my new classes I see some familar faces from previous classes - that's nice!
I still haven't been able to take part in any of the Saturday trips that the student activities team offer, it always fell on my Saturday to work. I missed the ski trip, but my goal is to make it to the canoe trip in August!
Apart from that I find life as a student inspiring. It's challenging in a good way, and I get to meet so many different people. Different ages, different interests, different stories ... it's great. This is an amazing journey.

Usual Suspects of Failure

A new season, a new quarter of classes...right now the parking lots are packed. Every quarter I have been here, it starts that way...but it doesn't end that way. Over the next few weeks, everyone will notice those few people in class that just stopped showing up. While some may have a good reason, some will not, and that is a sad situation (almost as sad as the fact that I can hear my parents voices in my head when I say what I am about to say).

Going back to school requires a committment and discipline, but once you give yourself an out to miss a class, you are on a slippery slope to letting yourself do it again and again. I have friend has actually lost points and dropped a letter grade for not showing up to just one class session. Granted he was stuck at work and didn't have much of a chance to make it to class, but there are several who decide that it just too hard or that they aren't learning what they want.

Pride comes before the fall...if you're worried about what the other folks in class are going to think if you ask a question, why? They may be wondering the same thing. Still embarrassed to ask? Check with the teacher after class or maybe the tutoring center. Sullivan has an advantage that some schools don't. The teachers are actually interested in helping you get an education that will carry you through your professional life. At some major universities, you are just a number and there are classes designed to make you drop out. Communicate with teachers and advisors and you will see, they all have email addresses. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Finally, allow yourself time and space to do the work. A lot of us have family obligations and distractions around the house, but to really reach your goals, getting away from the house may be the best way. I have spent almost every Saturday morning in the library to do homework. That may not be the way for you, you may want to stay after class and take advantage of computer lab, maybe go to a coffee shop and take over a table for an hour or so (this is a college town, so the owners won't be too surprised or upset).

You have taken the first step to helping yourself, you enrolled in college. There must have been a reason and a goal in mind. Don't forget your dreams and don't let anything stand in your way. Hope to see you in class!

A lot of fun things happened last quarter in my garde manger class.  We not only were able to do a presentation on how to carve ice for a Derby Party.  As a part of my 7 course final, I created a dessert that I could see on a menu in my restaurant…when I open it of course.  Enjoy the pictures of items that you could make as a part of your class!

Enjoy the quarter!!!

GRADUATION IS APPROACHING FAST!

So I'm entering my 9th quarter this June and the time has gone by so fast! I started my Culinary journey June 2012 and I will be done by the end of this year!! Not only am I pursuing a Culinary Arts degree but I'm also going for my Bachelor's in Hospitality Management and I can't believe that my journey is coming to an end.  I'm so grateful that I have met not only great, lifelong friends but I'm even more grateful for the staff and chefs that I have met along the way.  I have learned so much that will forever be embedded in my memory!  Not only have my skills pleased my family, but I have made so many of my friends and family's day by cooking or baking them something delicious that they talk about and even request for me to make for their special occasions.  It hasn't been an easy journey since I am married with children and was working full time but it's been well worth it!  If I had to do it all over again, I definitely would with no questions asked!

My May Experience!

SO.... I have figured out that my May blog didn't save. I apologize to anyone who reads this blog late. My original blog for May was talking about how exciting it is to be a Sullivan University student during Derby time. I know you all were excited to read it, but an error on my behalf occurred. So instead I will let you know two cool things that happened to me in the month of May. The cool things are as follows:

- I got my first Sullivan University Student Ambassador polo
-Went to early registration, and there I met students who are just starting their journey at Sullivan

I wish I could have took a picture, but I will put that in for June. Until then, I will leave you all with my video.
